Just as we were expecting following Toshiba's official announcement of HD DVD being dead, Universal and Paramount are reported to be switching over to the Blu-ray disc format. According to this Blu-ray.com source, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment made the announcement for Home Media Magazine.
According to this Gizmodo story, Paramount also planned abandoning HD DVD exclusivity using a clause in its HD DVD exclusivity contract that allows them to take on the competing format if Warner changed to Blu-ray, which Warner has already done. Now that Toshiba has officially announced the end of HD DVD, Warner certainly is not going to take on HD DVD again.
So far, it is unclear which will be the first Universal and Paramount titles to be made available on Blu-ray, let alone release dates. However, either way, they are certainly not going to announce any further HD DVD exlusive releases knowing that there will no longer be HD DVD players available to play them soon, apart from those who already have a HD DVD player or plan on getting one of the left over stock.
