Well, we all want a dual layer drive or we have one already. But not everyone has the desire to buy media to try the darn thing out yet. At 13 to 15 bucks a shot, as opposed to a dollar or two for single layer media, we're waiting. But, how long will the wait be? Tim Clatterbuck over at Verbatim feels our pain, he says they are going to spring into action and try to get the cost down, not much though in the short term. But long term? Sounds pretty good if his crystal ball is working right.
"We are definitely increasing our [manufacturing] capacity, and the aim is to try and get multipacks of media into the retailers," says Tim Clatterbuck, product manager for DVD media at Verbatim. He anticipates that these packs of 3 discs will start appearing in major retailers within a few weeks, priced at around US$ 35--a slight drop in price, but still much more expensive than their single-layer cousins. Previously, the discs had only been available in single packs or in packages with one double-layer disc and multiple single-layer media. Expensive Discs In the long term, Clatterbuck sees the price of double-layer discs remaining significantly higher than single-layer ones. "You're always going to be paying a premium over single-layer, but our goal is to get double-layer discs down to less than twice the cost of single-layer. Will we ever get it down to a dollar a disc? I don't know, but I'd guess that's a very long way away." |
Nice to hear they set a goal of that low of a price for us. Dual layer would be hot as heck at those prices. Go here if you want to read the whole interview over at PC World. Meanwhile, let's all keep an eye out for deals on this dual layer media. Who knows? Maybe we will see some good values popping up soon. If you do spot a good one, please make sure to mention it in our Bargain Basement Forum.
