While the movie industry is already complaining about the loss caused by piracy, there is more bad news. According to an article on the Salt Lake Tribune also DVD rentals are down 3 percent in 2002. But this is not cause by piracy or any other reason to blame consumers, it is because consumers prefer to pay 20$ to own a DVD instead of 4$ to rent it.
The total take from rentals of VHS cassettes and DVDs fell 3 percent, to $8.2 billion, in 2002. One big reason for the drop: Millions of video fans now prefer to pay about $20 -- and often much less -- to buy a DVD instead of about $4 to rent one. Video purchases grew 23 percent last year, to $12.1 billion. And most of that comes from sales of DVDs, up 53 percent to $8.7 billion. People spent almost as much on the discs as they did on movie theater tickets, which ended the year with sales of about $9.3 billion, up 12 percent. |
So sales of DVDs have been up, and this is of course no suprise. The populairty of DVD is increasing and seems to be unstoppable. Read the original article here.
