The popular open source media player VLC is now also available for Chrome OS. The application is a port of the Android version and has been adapted to work on Chromebooks too.
VLC is available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS but also on more exotic operating systems like OS/2, QNX and several BSD variants. With the addition of Chrome OS the software works on pretty much any device you can think of. The Chrome OS version has become possible because Google released 'App Runtime for Chrome' earlier this year which makes it possible to run Android apps on Chromebooks.
VLC for Chrome OS was tested with the popular Chromebook Pixel and HP Chromebook 14, on other Chromebooks the software might not run as expected. To use the app, it's recommend to use Chrome OS 48. The software can be downloaded from the app store for Chrome.
