In an effort to help consumers go green, Western Digital has unveiled a new 2TB Caviar Green HDD as manufacturers continue to increase overall storage capacities of HDD offerings.
The new drives have 32MB of cache and a 8.9ms seek time, along with having the ability to change between 5400 and 7200 RPM depending on the current load. The drive has a storage capacity of 400GB per square inch, and uses a 500GB per platter design in this specific drive.
WD plans to have the Caviar Green 2TB WD20EADS available by the end of the month.
WD also is releasing 1TB and 1.5TB versions of the HDD, hoping consumers are interested in going green to reduce power costs and help the environment. More than 10 percent of the 3.5-inch HDD market is made up off 1TB or higher drives, with storage costs getting cheaper.
Seagate is reportedly also working on a 2TB green HDD, but it's unknown when that drive will be available. As Seagate works to fix a major flaw in its Barracuda 7200.11 series, the 2TB HDD will likely be delayed until the self-bricking problem is resolved.
