Winamp and Shoutcast have been acquired by Belgian company Radionomy. The company acquired the software from AOL and plans to release mobile versions of Winamp in April this year. It also plans further development of Shoutcast.
Shortly after AOL announced it would pull the plug on the software rumors started to appear on the internet. According to the rumors, Winamp would have been acquired by the Belgian company Radionomy. The rumors were based on the fact that the nameservers of Winamp were already transferred to Radionomy. The company has now confirmed that it indeed acquired Winamp from AOL. The company also acquired the streaming audio platform Shoutcast.
The official numbers regarding the acquisition remain unknown, but TechCrunch reports that AOL now has 12% of the shares of Radionomy. The website also claims that the company paid an amount between € 3.6 and€ 7.2 million to AOL.
Radionomy, which adds advertisements to audio streams using its Targetspot technology, gets access to ten thousands Shoutcast stations with the acquisition. The service offers already access to seven thousand radio stations. With access to a larger audience, the company hopes to be more interesting to advertisers.
The plans for the desktop version of Winamp are unclear but Radionomy plans to release a mobile version of Winamp for Android and iOS. According to the Belgium startup because there are more opportunities on the mobile market for Winamp.
