Microsoft has extended support for Windows 8.1 systems without Update 1 with nearly a month. Previously the software-giant announced it would no longer provide updates to systems continuing to use the outdated versions of Windows 8.1
Microsoft has posted on its Windows Blog that the majority of the user has updated to Windows 8.1 Update 1. However it recognizes some users might not have been able to do so yet. The company writes, "While we believe the majority of people have received the update, we recognize that not all have. Having our customers running their devices with the latest updates is super important to us. And we’re committed to helping ensure their safety."
Being committed to the safety of their users means in this case that the company will extend the support time as the company adds, "As a result, we've decided to extend the requirement for our consumer customers to update their devices to the Windows 8.1 Update in order to receive security updates another 30 days to June 10th."
And that's likely really the final date as the company adds, " As noted previously, consumer customers who do not update their Windows 8.1 devices to the Windows 8.1 Update by this new deadline will no longer receive updates."
With the decision Microsoft seems to soften its update policy but updating to newer versions continues to be mandatory nevertheless,. In April the software developer stated that users who didn't update their Windows 8.1 in time, would not receive any security patches and updates anymore.
Windows 8.1 Update 1 was released in April this year and allow booting directly to the desktop and pinning of Windows 8 Metro applications to the taskbar.
