Company Information:
Company Profile
Lite-On IT started of as a business unit within Lite-On Technology Corporation in 1995. By that time the market for Optical Disc Drives (ODD) was growing very fast, and to be able to play a significant role in this, Lite-On Technology decided to establish a dedicated business unit to produce high quality CD-ROM drives. A large manufacturing facility was established in China to meet all demands and Lite-On soon became Taiwan's biggest CD-ROM drive manufacturer, and number three worldwide.
Due to the growing success in the ODD market, Lite-On IT transformed from a relatively small business unit to an independent subsidiary of Lite-On Group, producing over 1 million drives per month. In 1999, the foundation of Lite-On IT Corporation as the youngest member of the Lite-On Group was a fact. Besides headquarters in Taipei, branch offices were established in the United States (California) and Europe (The Netherlands).
In the years to follow, Lite-On IT continued its growth in the ODD business, by setting extensive distribution networks in Europe and the United States. With the introduction of more ODD products, like CD-RW, DVD-ROM, COMBO and DVD-RW drives, Lite-On IT increased it's production from 1 million drives per month in 1999, to no less then 5 million drives per month in 2005. With this unique achievement Lite-On IT became the world's second biggest ODD manufacturer.

An Introduction to Blu-Ray Disc:
Until recently, optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM relied on a red laser to read and write data. The new technology Blu-Ray format uses a blue-violet laser, which explains the name Blu-ray.
Blu-ray drives can also be made backwards compatible with CDs and DVDs through the use of a BD/DVD/CD compatible optical pickup unit.
A blue-violet laser (405nm) has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm); this makes it possible to focus the laser with even greater accuracy. This will allow data to be packed more tightly, so it's possible to squeeze more data on the disc even though it's the same size as a CD/DVD. This together with the change of numerical aperture to 0.85 enables Blu-ray discs to hold 25GB/50GB.
Blu-ray media is structurally different from DVD media. The Blu-ray disc consists of a single 1.1 mm thick polycarbonate substrate with a 0.1 mm thick cover layer on the bottom side of the disc, while the DVD disc is made of two 0.6 mm thick substrates. In both cases, two substrates are bonded together by a UV-cured resin adhesive:

DVD vs. Blu-ray disc structure
The larger 25 GB and 50 GB storage capacity of the Blu-ray disc is due to the higher density of pits and tracks on the disc. Unlike previous optical discs, Blu-ray uses a shorter-wavelength, tighter-focused violet laser to read and write pits that are about three times smaller than pits used in DVDs:

Comparison of Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD and DVD formats:
We include a table of both high-definition formats and including DVD format for comparison.

On the next page we will take a look at the drives CD Reading Performance...
Reading performance:
For these tests we will use Nero CD/DVD-Speed to read various CD, DVD and BD media. As already mentioned in the introduction, this drive supports:
- BD: 4x
- DVD: 12x
- CD: 32x
CD-ROM pressed discs:
For this test we used a pressed CD-ROM disc containing Creative Blaster Audigy install CD that is close to 74 minutes long. Below you will see the produced result:

CD-Recordable Discs:
For this test we made a copy of the original Creative Blaster Audigy install CD. The disc we used was a Verbatim 48X certified CD-R disc manufactured by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation. (Thanks to Verbatim Germany for sending us this media).

Again, we made a copy of the original Creative Blaster Audigy install CD; this time we used a Verbatim Ultra Speed (32X) CD-RW disc made by Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation. (Thanks to Verbatim Germany for sending us this media).

100 minutes CD-R:
The used 100 minutes CD-R disc, is slightly smaller than 100 minutes, to be exact it is 99:10 minutes long.

Audio – Digital Audio Extraction:
We used Nero CD/DVD-Speed to measure the transfer rate. The audio disc we used is about 78 minutes long (77:43:45).

Advanced audio – EAC test:
For this test we used EAC (Exact Audio Copy) to test the drive’s audio extraction performance.
|
According to EAC the Lite-On drive support Caching, which is considered negative - while ripping audio. |

In the past we have tried to read the content of Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) Blu-ray game discs, but our previous drives like the Philips SPD7000BD and LG GGW-H20L was not able to recognize or read those discs.
So why not try a Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) Blu-ray game disc (Lost Planet) in the Lite-On DH-401S as well?

Windows recognized the disc!
Let us explore the media a bit:

Let us just list the content of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) Blu-ray game disc by just using the “Dir” command:

So, we are able to read the content of the disc and maybe this is the first step in the direction making backups of our Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) games?
- We guess, only time will show us the answer of that.
This concludes our Lite-On DH-401S review, let us head on to the last page to read our Conclusion…
Positive:
- Reads BD Media at 4x
- Reads DVD±R and DVD-ROM at 12x
- Reads DVD±RW and DVD±R DL at 8x
- Reads the content of Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) Blu-ray Game Discs
- Drive runs very quiet
- 8MB Buffer
- Can perform disc quality testing
- Very good bundle (Software, SATA Cable, Screws & extra Bezel)
- Nice looking bezel design
- Consistent reading speeds
- Inexpensive
Negative:
- Reads CD Media at only 32x
- Doesn't read DVD-RAM *
* Firmware dependant. There should also be a Lite-On DH-401S firmware that supports the reading of DVD-RAM media.
Conclusion:
Let us summarize the most important positive and negative points below:
The main positive points:
The Lite-On DH-401S is a very capable reader and performed reliably throughout our tests. Reading speeds are fairly good and well up to standard for this type of drive.
The Lite-On DH-401S also has some neat features. The ability to read Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) games is a very useful feature to have. The DH-401S is also able to do Disc Quality Scanning on Blu ray media, as well as scan DVD and CD media. This should make the drive appealing to members of CD Freaks, who like to test their burned media.
The Lite-On DH-401S also runs very quietly, which is ideal for a media centre PC, or watching movies on your main PC.
The main negative points:
There is hardly anything negative to say about the Lite-On DH-401S. Reading speed on CD media is rather slow at 32x by today’s standards and the ability to read DVD-RAM media would have been a nice inclusion.
So to sum it all up, this is what we would say: “The Lite-On DH-401S is a neat solution and a good performing drive. A nice effort from Lite-On”
By using the price grabber feature at geizhals we found the drive listed at 95 EUR (April 2008).
Based on our results and experiences with the Lite-On DH-401S we would like to give it our Safe Buy award.
