First legal homebrew PS3 FTP server hack is now available

A user over at github.com who goes by the name stoneMcClane has released what is purported to be the first legal homebrew FTP server for the PS3.

What is it that makes this FTP server legal while all others are not? This one actually uses PSL1GHT SDK instead of the Sony official SDK for PS3.

From the PS3 FTP readme file:

PS3-FTP has been tested and should be compatible with the following clients:
* Filezilla
* FlashFXP
* CuteFTP
* WinSCP
* Windows Explorer
* BSD/UNIX FTP shell client

Disclaimer:
This software is made available under the terms of the GNU GPL v3, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/ for details.

According to some of the commenters over at PS3Hax.net, this FTP server software is faster at transferring large files than other FTP clients, but seems to have some lockup issues. Of course, with this being the first release there are bound to be some issues that will surely be addressed in forthcoming versions.

If nothing else, it’s nice to see people working on homebrew applications in ways that don’t break Sony’s PS3 Terms of Service. Hopefully Sony won’t make any silly changes that prevent the use of an alternate SDK.
